More about the history of this bassoon:
Players history: Ralph Morgan purchased this Bassoon from NU bassoonist (freshman) Kelly Rohe in the Fall of 1993. He played it professionally in the Dallas Winds from 1994 -2003 as well as the bulk of his freelance career until 2020. Regarding Kelly Rohe, it is his understanding that she played this bassoon in the Chicago area during the 1980s. The owner before Kelly (and perhaps the original owner) was Chicago Lyric Opera contra bassoonist Lewis Kirk. Ralph spoke with Lewis when he was in Chicago for grad school and, as he was thinking about buying the Puchner, he asked him why he sold it? He loved the horn but needed to upgrade for Lyric and bought his Heckel.
Ralph’s teacher Bob Barris, who was a student of Hugh Cooper's (Bob was Kelly's bassoon teacher at NU,) said it was his understanding that Cooper had done the initial in-take work on the bassoon when it came to America and Cooper told Bob frequently "this puchner is one of the best to ever come to the USA."
Repair history: Carl Sawicki did repair in 1976 (see boot cap interior). Ralph had Scott Walzel (DSO) work on the horn in 2005 and 2008 (routine maintenance). Ken Potsic worked on the horn (routine maintenance) in 2019 and Peter Grenier did work in 2021 (routine and add C plateau key).
Disclosures: It has some superficial cracks in the boot joint (Bass joint receiver well) and the lower Bass joint tenon (both of which have been sealed.
The bassoon has a plateau key for C on the Wing Joint but also can be interchanged with the original ring key (included).
