The WEAIT MUSIC Beveling Tool with Sanding Channel is two tools in one. The Beveling Tool allows the reed-maker to create an even bevel on all four sides of the tube. The Sanding Channel supports the cane as you sand smooth the gouged side of the cane. Marks on the edges of the Sanding Channel show the recommended sanding area. Using the Sanding Channel will not correct inherent deficiencies in the gouged cane. The Beveling Tool with Sanding Channel comes with illustrated instructions.

Formerly made by Weait, now made by Bocal Majority (authorized).

General Characteristics of a Good Bassoon Reed (a concise video by Chris Weait):

  • Place the tool against a firm surface
  • Grasp the cane gouged-side down with your thumb on top and forefinger on the blade area close to the ledge
  • With the butt end lined up half way along the V-cut, keep the cane flat. Don't allow it to tilt within the V
  • Move the cane back and forth 10 or 12 times. Your fingers hitting the dowel will limit the distance
  • Reverse the cane to do the other end
  • The waterproof sandpaper provided should last indefinitely. Occasionally brush off cane dust or remove sandpaper to rinse it off

*The tool can be used by right or left-handed people
